I am an Associate Professor of Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (University of Amsterdam). My research focuses on how people form their political beliefs, with particular attention to the role of personality and emotions. I use this approach to study polarization, support for democracy, and populism. I rely on a wide range of methods—from focus groups and large-scale surveys to experiments and laboratory studies using physiological measures. I conduct my research according to the principles of open and transparent science, and I serve as Senior Associate Editor at the Journal of Experimental Political Science.
