I am an associate professor of Comparative Political Behaviour at the Department of Political Science of the University of Amsterdam. I co-direct the Hot Politics Lab since 2023. My main research agenda aims to understand the role of citizens in democratic erosion and democratization. I study under what conditions citizens accept or contest different (democratic and non-democratic) political entities: leaders, institutions, organizations, and decisions. I focus on the role of political intuition, the trade-offs citizens make between democratic values, partisanship, and policy preferences, and their consequences for the stability of democratic and authoritarian regimes. I use (survey) experiments as my primary research tool. You can find my publications on this website or on my university profile.
